about CONTEMPORARY RECORDS

Founded by Lester Koenig in 1951, west coast jazz label Contemporary Records gained worldwide attention in the late 1950s for its timely intersections with elite artists Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Shelly Manne, and more. Over the next half-decade, the Contemporary name became synonymous with a quality product befitting the audio-obsessed — an association it holds to this day. In hindsight, its example stands as a unique one: a family-owned indie that peaked at the highest level and survived more than three decades without shifting focus or selling out its taste. To explore its history, we need to examine its product: vinyl.

about 8481 Melrose & its author

This is an educational resource for vinyl enthusiasts, jazz collectors, and thinking people with time to spare. We’re digging  into the history of Contemporary using vinyl records as our evidence. Why? Because it’s fun. It’s music, and audio, and history, and art. I’ve been researching Contemporary for a few years and want to establish a better common knowledge base around this one very specific subject because I think it’s a special one.

the title-by-title guide.

Going forward, the goal is to tackle titles one by one and document each of their histories on vinyl. The focus will be on domestic US deliveries made under Koenig ownership of the Contemporary catalog (ie. from 1949 to 1984).

To start, one title is fully cataloged (The Arrival of Victor Feldman) — and a second is covered in mono only (Way Out West). Stereo coming soon on the latter.

This will expand with time. Hundreds of records are cataloged but work remains to write and organize the actual pages. Some will earn more polished narratives like Arrival above; others will be more direct presentations/dumps of information. Some will start as data and be revised to something more digestible.

Everything is subject to revision and update. This will always be a work in progress.
